A Kansas state senator who caused a furor where reference is compared Schemed Parenthood to a Nazi concentration camp is now running for Congress.
Steve Fitzgerald, a conservative Republican from Leavenworth, announced Saturday thathe will seekthe seat for the2nd Congressional District in 2018, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
He also filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on April 1.
The seat is currently held by RepublicanRep. Lynn Jenkins, who has decided toretire from public service, according to the Kansas City Star.
We necessity a good conservative Republican to hold this seat, Fitzgerald told the Leavenworth Times, adding that it would be harmful to the presidents agenda for a Democrat to win the seat.
Fitzgerald will be running against at least one other Republican: Vernon Fields, a city council member in Basehor. However, Fitzgerald has the higher national profile, if simply because of commentshe made about Schemed Parenthood last month.
He wrote a nasty reply upon discovering that someone had made a donation to the womens health organization in his name.
It is with great consternation that I received your letter that a donation was constructed in my honor to your heinous organization, Fitzgerald wrote.
He then compared Schemed Parenthood to aconcentration camp the Nazis builtin 1933.
The letter was tweeted out by Planned Parenthood Great Plains.
Fitzgerald brought up Nazis again during an interview with the Kansas City Star.
I suppose the Nazis ought to be incensed by the comparing, Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald has offended other groups since he first ran for the Kansas state senate in 2012. During his first campaign, he told voters that Democrats should not be Catholic.
