Magic Johnson appeared onThe Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday and opened up about his experiences surrounding the coming out of his son EJ.
EJ, who came out in 2013, is a reality star who has appeared on Rich Kids of Beverly Hills and his own spinoff EJ NYC. Johnson told DeGeneres that hes learned through his sons coming out that you need to love your children no matter what.
Its all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become, he says in the above clip. Its all about loving them no matter who they are, what they decide to do. When my son came out I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents. And we love him EJ is amazing.
Johnson went on to say that its crucial that parents of LGBTQ kids remain supportive of their children because of all of the discrimination they will face.
Youe got to support your child because theres so many people who try to discriminate against them so they need you to support them because if you dont support them, who is going to support them? And love them.
Johnson and his wife Cookie previously discussed EJs coming out, sharing that their initial struggle stemmed from their religious beliefs. However, Cookie said that it was her commitment to God that led to her supporting her gay son. Ultimately, I just prayed to God and said God, You reveal to me how you feel about this, she said, and he was like Love. Love your child. And thats what I thats what Jesus was about: love.
