Late last night, news broke that Jared Kushner, son-in-law and senior adviser to President Donald Trump, used a private email address for government business, possibly in violation of federal record-keeping laws.
Now, his wife, Ivanka Trump, who is also an adviser to the president, is being accused of the same actions.
According to a new report by Newsweek, American Oversight obtained an email from Ivanka discussing government business with Linda McMahon, President Trump’s head of the Small Business Administration.
At the time, Ivanka Trump was not officially a White House employee, although she was working on behalf of her father and sitting in on government meetings.
Austin Ivers, executive director of American Oversight said: “It’s simply breathtaking that both Ivanka and Jared Kushner would conduct government on a personal email account after running a campaign centered on that very issue. The fact that they would brazenly ignore rules governing email use raises even more questions about their judgment and fitness to hold positions in the White House.”
A statement from the White House to Newsweek reiterated that Ivanka was not a federal employee at the time, but that by emailing other official accounts, she “ensured the records were preserved and available under the Federal Records Act.”
One of the leading arguments President Trump made in his campaign against Hillary Clinton was that her use of a private email server violated federal law, for which she should be jailed.
