Bo Derek has attempted to give the MOST neutral response to Kim Kardashian West‘s braids controversy.
The key word there is “attempted.” As you surely know, Keeks was put on blast for crediting her recent braided hairstyle to the 61-year-old actress, as she famously donned the look in the 1979 film 10.

Of course, as the hairstyle is traditionally worn by black women and men, it didn’t take long for social media users to accuse Mrs. West of “cultural appropriation.” In an attempt to diffuse the situation, Miz Derek took to Twitter and wrote:
Hey! It’s just a hairstyle that I wore in the movie “10” @KimKardashian calls it the Bo Derek because she copied my pattern of braids. I copied it from Ann-Margret’s backup singer from her Vegas Sho. And we all copied Queen Nofretari. I hope Her Royal Highness is flattered. pic.twitter.com/UuQkh8VKOi

We’re cringing reading this. You can tell she’s trying so hard to be politically correct, while also justifying Kim’s snafu.
Not to mention, we doubt fans are thrilled with Bo dubbing the historically celebrated Fulani braids as “just a hairstyle.” Thus, it isn’t surprising that many have shut down Derek’s defense online:
So everyone on this thread who is white and thinks the braids are beautiful and just hair. Remember that when a POC walks into your place of employment for an interview or if hired, to work, that there better be nothing said about their hair. Mmmk!

We’re sure Kim appreciates Bo’s support, but we’re certain the industry vet is kicking herself for getting involved. Smh.
