The House of Representatives might need to vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA) again because someone forgot to do their homework.
The House passed the billthanks to the Republican majority on May 4. This was a rush vote pushed byHouse Speaker Paul Ryan, who honestly just really needed a win.
But apparently Ryan pushed the vote too soon, and now might have to take it back, according to Bloomberg.
Health care is Ryans thing. But back in March, his first attempt at a health care bill to repeal and replace Obamacare failed miserably.
Repealing and replacing Obamacare was something Ryans been screaming about for years, so it was pretty embarrassing for him to fall on his face when he got his first chance.
So Ryan tried, tried again with the AHCA House vote in May.
And it worked! The bill passedjust barely.
It was set to go on to the Senate for a vote. Republicans celebrated. They had a party at the White House and beer and everything. Classy.
Theres just one little catch before that Senate vote.
Apparently, Ryan has not sent the bill to the Senate yet, despite it passing two weeks ago in the House.
Thats because he forced the House vote before theCongressional Budget Office (CBO) analyzed the effects the AHCA would have on Americans.The CBO is a nonpartisan group that estimates things.
If the CBO shows some costlyeffects, changes may have to be made on the bill, which means the House would have to vote.
Theres a chance the CBO analysis will not look super good for Ryan and the Republicans.
Back in March, the CBO analyzed the first AHCA attempt. That analysis found that 24 million people would lose insurance by 2026, which, yikes.
This current iteration of the AHCA seems likely to cost some Americansa lot, especially where it concerns pre-existing conditionsand womens health. And itd defund Planned Parenthood, so thats fun.
